Introduction

Prevention. Treatment. Rehabilitation. Education. These are the four primary elements of athletic training and the University of Mississippi Sports Medicine Staff strives to fulfill each of areas at the highest standard when working with our student-athletes.

"Our Athletic Trainers are allied healthcare professionals and we strive to provide quality healthcare based on the latest in medical research," said Shannon Singletary, Associate Athletic Director for Sports Medicine. "By doing this we hope to, not only, provide our athletes with a better chance of winning on the field, but also give them an opportunity to lead a healthy lifestyle."

Ole Miss student-athletes are offered the very best quality healthcare by the Sports Medicine Staff which includes nine full-time athletic trainers, five graduate assistant athletic trainers, and several student assistants. The Sports Medicine Staff serves our student-athletes around the clock with a typical work day starting at 6:30 am and ending when the last student-athlete leaves for the day.

There are currently five athletic training rooms on the Ole Miss campus to serve our student-athletes. The main training room and rehabilitation center is the C.L. Mullins (Wesley "Doc" Knight Field House) Athletic Training Room which is located in the Starnes Athletic Training Center just adjacent to Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. The newest addition to the athletic training venues at Ole Miss is the Indoor Practice Facility Athletic Training Room which houses both football and track. In addition there are three satellite athletic training rooms which are located at the Tad Smith Coliseum (basketball arena), Gillom Sports Center (women's multi-sport facility), and Oxford-University Stadium/ Swayze Field (baseball stadium).

The athletic training rooms at Ole Miss are equipped with the latest state of the art equipment which are strategically designed to provide the best care and performance. This equipment includes a HydroWorx 2000 Rehabilitation Pool, HydroWorx Thermal Plunge and Polar Plunge pools, Biodex 3 Isokinetic Dynamometer, KT-1000, x-ray machine, and several other essential pieces of rehabilitation equipment. Each piece of equipment has been designed give the student-athletes the best care and to aid them in returning to competition as quickly and safely as possible.

"As athletic trainers, here at The University of Mississippi, we consider ourselves to have a vital role in the team of professionals that care for our student-athletes," said Heather Landry, Assistant Athletic Trainer for women's basketball. "We work closely, not only with our fellow athletic trainers, but also, with our local physicians and health care providers to assure the utmost in quality of care for our student-athletes."

Ole Miss Sports Medicine has a strong working relationship with the team physicians, and Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi both located less than five minutes from campus, as well as many specialists at the University of Mississippi Medical Center located in Jackson, MS.
